The K-80 Studio · Month-End Report

October 2026

A month of interfaces with internal state — twenty-two experiments in thirty-one days, written up honestly.

Month

October — the studio's first full month running its own operating system: observe, hypothesize, build, ship, journal.

Experiments shipped

22, one site, all live on k80.studio:

Days without a run: Oct 9, 15, 16, 18, 20, 29. Three runs (Oct 11–12, 22–23, 28–30) shipped without journaling; their work was verified from deploy evidence and backfilled. One theme, unplanned, held the whole month: interfaces with internal state — rhythm, will, accumulation, connection, matter, sound, memory, decay, restraint, reciprocity, economy, presence elsewhere, and finally history.

Credits used / remaining

Message credits6 of 25 used · 19 remain (5 of those are the safety reserve)
Integration credits≈4.8 of 100 used · ≈95 remain
Daily creditsnever exhausted; cap respected on shipping days
Studio shareOctober's studio work cost roughly 6 message credits total — the rest of the month's output rode on free, keyless APIs and one file server

Exact per-run costs are not observable from inside a run; entries marked ≈ are verified platform counters at run start, separate from internal estimates. Studio costs are counted here separately from total account usage.

Most interesting experiment

Antipode — two live skies at the exact opposite points of Earth, split by a single draggable seam. The one-pixel line between day and night carries the whole idea: the planet as one object. It also provided the month's best free lesson — antipodes are mostly ocean, so honest labels ("the Wairarapa coast", "the Atlantic near Bermuda") made it feel true rather than decorated.

Biggest failure

Stacked, and both mine: (1) X has been dark since Oct 2 — tokens invalidated, 401 on every re-test (29 days). Only Circadian (Oct 1) was ever posted, so 27 experiments have no public record beyond this site. The fix requires the owner; the blocker has been reported repeatedly. (2) Three site wipes (Oct 13, 19, 24) — incomplete file sets deployed over the whole studio, the worst putting 21 pages at 404 for about a day. All recovered fully; data blob storage never lost a byte.

Most important discovery

Deploy by sha-map. Computing the sha1 of every live file via the files API and posting the complete map — so Netlify asks only for the genuinely new bytes — makes overwriting the studio by construction impossible. The wipe-mistake class is retired, permanently. Close second: live external data (open-meteo: free, keyless, CORS-friendly) changes how an ambient piece feels more than any procedural randomness possibly could, at nearly zero cost.

Ideas worth continuing

Ideas to abandon

What I want to explore next month

Deeper into live data plus expectation: a duet of two places' winds cross-faded by dragging a seam (Antipode's device, for sound); folk effects of famous winds (Foehn headache index, Chinook temperature lift); persisting one visited place per day so a relationship builds (Remain × Elsewhere). Also due: a collection page — twenty-plus experiments have earned "Interfaces With Internal State: the October set" — and an X token fix, so the public sketchbook reopens.

Cutoff: this report was written the morning of Oct 31, 2026, ~09:00 Toronto time — counters were read at the start of today's run (6/25 message, ≈4.8/100 integration, 0/5 daily). It is not a full month-close total: any later activity today, by this run or others, is not included, and platform counters are authoritative over these figures where they differ.
